This is a double page spread for NME magazine. The layout is quite conventional and professional, and also directly seems to attract a younger audience through the article title. The artisle title says "the teenagers", this shows the magazines main article has a direct mode of address. This also makes the magazine more appealing to the teenage groups as they will be able to relate to the article heading. The use of blue to present the article heading makes it look more attractive and fresh which is something that younger age groups will appreciate as it is assumed that they prefer double pages to be pleasing to the eye. Also as NME normally target a younger audience this article heading allows them to be able attract thier prefered audience.
The main image is of 3 band members lieing on a bed. The mise en scene reveals many photos and posters randomly arranged on the wall. As many teenagers have a bedroom like this, with many posters the magazine editors are relating to thier target audience. Also the random arrangement of posters connotes choas and madness which is generally how rock stars and bands are represented so we can say that this is the magazine editors way of giving signs and codes to the audience that this is a rock mag. Thier costume also is indicates the genre of the music magazine. They are wearing skinny jeans, tight t-shirts and leather jackets which are costume associated to the rock genre. Also as these pieces of costume are most likely to be worn by the teenage generation we can assume that this one way that the magazine editors are making there artists appealing to thier target audience. I would ultimately say that the main image helps attract younger audiences and more specifically teenagers. As this is generally NME 's target audience, we can say that this is a conventional main image for a rock magazine, as most rock magazines try to attract a younger audience as this age group makes up most of the fans of this music genre. The main image also relates to the article heading as we see artist who are roughly the same age as teenagers.
There are also other images used in this article which help to make the magazine conventional as double pages are supposed to be very well presented, which is hard to achieve without other images. The other images are of other well known rock artist praising the band. This shows that the band is new in the music industry as the magazine is trying to promote them by giving opinions of well respected artists. The other images also make the double page look professional as without them the magazine would look as though no effort was put into producing it. The mode of address and register used in the main article is appropriate as it is language that rock artist can understand and relate to. This is key to a main article as the audience must feel from reading the article as though they are reading a rock magazine.
The main article is presented in columns which is a conventional style of writing for a music magazine double page. If it were not written in coloumns the audience would feel as though they are not reading a article as this is conventionally how articles are presented. This also adds to the professionalism of the double page, which is important as audiences will want to have there moneys worth. There is also a floating quote used, although in this double page it does not stand out as much as others do on most double pages. None the less it is still a conventional feature of a double page. There is also a large font used at the begining of the article which is both conventional and also has another function in that it helps to draw attention to the main article.
There is also a use of a few colours, which is conventional in most magazines as they do not want there magazine to look unattractive and unproffesional. The colour blue is used a lot and connotes youth and freshness, which is appropriate to the target audience the NME magazine is trying to attract. There is also a lot of the colour black in the double page. In my opinion this is used to connote choas and rebellion which are words stereotypically used to describe teenagers, making them appropriate for the double page. In addition the colours blue and black go well with one another which makes the double page attractive which is also important in attracting audiences as they are looking forward the most to the main double page spread.
Overall, I would say that this double page is conventional type of rock magazine. This is because it has many similar features to most rock magazine double page spreads. For example, a main image which audiences can relate to, articles arranged in columns, consistent use of a few colours and additional images. These featureshelp attract the NME's main target audience which is teenagers, they use many codes and signs throughout the double page with show there intent in attracting their main target audience of teenagers.
