This is a contents page for the magazine DRUMMER, the contents page use mainy images which makes it look more visual than factual. This is possibly because tha magazine is more targeted to the youger audiences, this is common in most contents pages which are targeted at younger audiences because it is assumed that younger audiences prefer images than text. The vast majority of the images have drums in the mise en scene. This indicates to audiences that the magazine is based around drummers. Also the fact that the main image is of drummer shows that drummers are the stars of this magazine. As younger audiences are mostly fans of music that consists of drums it is suggested that this magazine attracts a younger audience who are interested in rock music but more specifically drummers. It is evident what is the main image in this contents page as there is one image which is bigger than the rest. This image draws the most attention and it can therefore be suggested that it is a interview with the biggest or most famous drummer in the magazine. This image was probably made the biggest by the editors as its purpose maybe to attract potential consumers.
The masthead of the magazine is placed in the contents page again. This was either to promote the company or to maybe emphasis that the magazine is about drummers. The typography of the masthead is bold and large connoting strength and power. The fact that the editors have included there masthead in the contents page is unique and unconventional. It differentiates the contents page from others. The use of the typography to represent the artist is unusual as drummers are normally in the background and away from the attention and spotlight. So this magazine is representing the drummers in a way that is unknown to most. After the main image the masthead is the biggest in the contents page so it can be suggested that this magazine is trying to attract audiences who are fans of drummers who are more likely to be younger audiences as they are make up the majority of the fans of rock music.
The use of few colours to represent the features of the magazine makes the magazine look more professional and similar to well known magazines. Using a few colours is a conventional presentatonal device of most magazine genres. The features are represented in the colours red and black. These colours are consistently used throughout the whole of the magazine. The use of red makes the contents page look attractive and eyecatching. This is used as the editors of the magazine probably want to attract young audiences and assume that the younger generation likes to see brighter colours instead of dull colours.
The other images used in the contents page make the magazine seem as if it has a lot of interviews and is therefore worth purchasing. Also as the other artist are well known in the rock and drummer section of the music industry it can be suggested that the magazine is attempting to attract fans of the rock genre once again through this presentational device. The majority of the images are of drums so we can also assume that the magazine is more specifically attracting people who like drummers. Images consume the most space in the contents page making this contents page very visual and attractive. This is not very common in magazines as most magazines from all genres have a contents page which is more textual as the purpose of the contents page is to inform the consumers. For this it can also be suggested that the magazine may be presented unconventionally to help sell it. This may partly be due to the fact that magazine industry is very competitive and in recent times it is not uncommon for a magazine to be presented differently or unconventionally in order to increase sales. There is also a image of drum set, in my opinion this is the magazines unique selling point as this is a very unusual image that I have not seen in other contents pages.
Overall, the drummer magazine has been presented differently to most music magazines in the other music genres. It uses images, colours and typography to make the magazine look more attractive and also to establish the genre of the magazine. For example, the use of images of drums clearly states that the magazine is attracted to fans of drummers. As the contents page is very visual instead of textual I would say that this magazines target audience is the slightly young generation as this age group is most facinated by the rock genre and drummers.
