NME lilly allen double page spread

This is a double page spread for NME magazine, in which they are interviewing Lilly Allen. I would say that the layout for this double page spread is unconventional to the rock/pop genre. The main image in this double page spread represents lilly allen in a stereotypical way. She is presented as a stereotypical rock artist with her jet black hair and rolled up sleeved shirt. Her costume is what we would expect from a rock/pop artist therefore we can assume that this is a rock/pop magazine. In the main image the artist has her hands on her back as if she is not bothered, which is a stereotypically how rock/pop artists are represented. Also as the main image takes up most of the space on the double page, this may represent lilly allen as a big star or the most important thing in the double page. The large size of the main image makes the magazine more visual and eyepleasing. This double page spread is unconventional in that it has only one image. Most double page spreads and espicially rock magazines like NME usually have a lot of images. The purpose of this maybe that the magazine editors want the double page spread to be based around the artist as she is well known and interesting to young rock fans which is NME's target audience.

The article is presented in columns which is a conventional way to present text, but as the article is quite short we can assume that it carries on to the next page. Another conventional aspect of the magazine is that it has  a direct mode of address and register which is appropriate to the NME's main target audience as they can understand and relate to language used. This is key in magazine main articles as when a audience is reading a main article they must feel as though they are reading text which is appropriate to the genre they like. For example, if a rock magazine used language which was unappropriste or too formal th audience may be drawn away from thw magazine. A main article must interest the audience as this is the aspect of the magazine most audiences are most looking forward to.

There is also a floating quote used in this magazine double page, which is a conventional feature of most double pages. It is also something quite interesting as its purpose is to interest the audience in reading the article. In this floating quote the artist gives a little information about herself which younger audiences or aspirers of her may find interesting. However, this floating quote is unusual in that it consumes a lot of space on the magazine. This is unconventional as floating quotes are not meant to be that important in the magazine double page. Another, unconventional aspect of this music magazine is that it has no main heading for the article, this is a feature which most magazines have espicially rock magzines.

The magazine double page is not very eyecatching and attractive, which is unconventional as mostrock/pop magazines normally use alot of bright colours and images. this magazine only uses black, white and red (most of which is from Lilly Allens costume). The magazine may have purposely not made the double page very attractive or visual as they may have wanted to draw attention to the artist.

Overall, I would say that this magazine double page is unconvetional, although it has many conventional aspects of a rock/pop magazine it does not have some key features of rock magazine. For example, there is no article heading, other images and bright colours. None the less, I beleive that the magazine manages to attract its main target audience of teenager who are fans of rock magzines. It manages to attract its target audience through the main image, article and flosting quote which the target audience can relate to.
